Paolo Portoghesi received his architecture degree from the University of Rome
in 1957 and has worked professionally as a building and urban designer since 1958.
Along with his design work he also performs in an instructional capacity, teaching
History of Criticism in the Architecture Department of the University of Rome
from 1962 to 1966. From 1967 to 1979 he was full professor of the History of Architecture
at the Milan Polytechnic and was chairman of the department from 1968 to 1976.
He has been full professor of the History of Arhcitecture at the University of
Rome since 1982. The author of numerous papers and essays, particularly addressing
Renaissance and Baroque architecture, the Liberty style and contemporary architecture,
Portoghesi has also been the editor of the magazines Controspazio, Eupalino, and
Materia.
His most memorable written works include: Guarino Guarini (1956), Roma Barocca
(1966), Francesco Borromini (1967), Dizionario Enciclopedico di Architettura ed
Urbanistica (1969), Album del Liberty (1975), Album degli anni Venti (1976), Album
degli anni Cinquanta (1977), Album degli Anni Trenta (1978), Dopo l'architettura
moderna (1980). Director of the Architecture Section of the Venice Biennial from
1979 to 1982, and its President since 1983, Portoghesi organized the exhibition
"La presenza del passato" in 1980 at the Corderie di Venezia with La Via Novissima
dedicated to the theme of Postmodernism.
His work has won many awards, including the Laurea Honoris Causa from the University
of Lausanne in 1984, and has been the object of numerous publications and exhibitions.
His more notable works include the Casa Baldi, Rome (1959), Casa Andreis a Sandriglia,
Rieti (1964), Casa Papanice, Rome (1966), the Istituto Tecnico Industriale, Aquila
(1969), the Chiesa della Sacra famiglia a Fratte, Salerno (1969), the City Library
and Social Center, Avezzano (1970), the Royal Palace of Amman, Jordan (1973) the
Urban Planning Scheme and International Airport for Khartoum, Sudan (1973), the
Islamic Cultural Center and Mosque in Rome (1975), and the Banca Popolare del
Molise, Campobasso (1984). As a designer he has collaborated with, among others,
Alessi, Cleto Munari, Ceramiche Montesanto, Poltronova, and Richard -Ginori. |
