the book "L'architettura presa per mano" (Hand on architecture) by Stefano Casciani,
Idea Books, Milan, 1992
Already in the 1970's Davide Mercatali and Paolo Pedrizzetti gained recognition
as interpreters of a "young" style, with the design of very basic useful objects;
for example i Balocchi of 1981, a series of faucets and bathroom accessories.
With this extremely successful range the two designers introduced the use of colour
in the Italian production of such goods.
The bathroom environment and its accessories has since then become a kind of specialization
for them, in which they have been able to carry out a long and thorough study
of the perception and the use of these instruments, as "banal" as they are indispensable
for everyday life.
With analogous care they have also designed household appliances, cutlery, and
other objects where the prevailing characteristic is the aspect of the manual
utilization.

The monocontrol blender Calibro (1981) and the Giotto can opener, for example,
are therefore characterized by an analogous element, a little curved metal bar
that constitutes the lever on which to act in order that the appliance functions:
a form that is open and closed at the same time. |

| In
their collaboration with Olivari, Mercatali and Pedrizzetti have remained faithful
to their markedly visual approach: the Sfinge doorhandle is, infact, a very visible
object, as a result of the combination of the bumper cap (which is always black)
and the colours white, red, yellow. At the same time the doorhandle is very comfortable,
because of the ample surface on which the hand can rest. |
