Joe Colombo
(Milan 1930-1971)

After studying at the Brera Fine Arts Academy Colombo attended the faculty of architecture at the Milan Polytechnics from 1950 to 1955; he began working as a designer in 1953, and participated at numerous art exhibitions in Italy and abroad. Since 1962 he dedicated himself exclusively to design, with a programmatic avant-garde research approach.

After receiving important recognitions at the XIII Milan Triennial (1964), he joined, in 1966, the "Domus Ricerca 1 " group, striving, while working for industries and large-scale distribution (La Rinascente, Milan; Lafayette and Printemps, Paris; Gimbel's and Macy's, New York) to diffuse the products of design to a more ample market, through the large department stores.

Ha received the "Compasso d'oro" prize in 1967; in 1968 he presented a Programmable system for living at the XIV Milan Triennial.

This, together with his participations at the exhibitions Visiona I (1969) and Italy: the New Domestic Landscape (New York, 1971) represent important proposals of global innovation in the sector of home interiors.
